The fatal Arab spring

The Arab spring started in 2010 with the Tunisian revolution. Many, myself included, believed that the revolution sweeping through North Africa would bring democracy and stability.

However, the opposite has happened with the rise of Islamic State and other barbaric revolutionary groups. The British public once supported these militias, not IS but other militant groups.

This has resulted in IS being given breathing space as the Assad regime lost ground.

We thought this was a good thing in the beginning....

But then, we hear about massacres and just today, boys and men are being tortured by IS.

This whole Arab spring has been somewhat disappointing. I really thought that countries previously under dictatorship could become reformed and democratic but, as shown in Egypt and the photo below this has simply not materialised. Perhaps George Orwell was right with 'Animal Farm', someone always becomes the dictator...

Then again, there have been some real success stories that haven't been reported on as much, like Tunisia. This is a real success and is becoming a fully fledged democracy and with time it shall grow.

So, perhaps it isn't all doom and gloom and we should look up.

But...then again the Arab Spring still hasn't run it's course. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Quatar and UEA (otherwise know as Dubai) haven't even made the first steps towards a revolution and at the moment are making steps backwards and all because they're all wealthy enough not to give a damn. As if money can buy happiness...
